Social Workers

Working with young people in the
Children's Hearing System

Introduction

The Project is run by NCH Action for Children and Apex Scotland in partnership with Glasgow City Council. The project aims to provide a service the assist young people who are involved in repeated and/or serious offending and who are supervised through the Children's Hearing System.

Who We Work With

Young people can be referred to the Project if the following criterion applies:

bullet aged between 15-18
bullet resident in Glasgow
bullet whose offending is persistent and/or serious
bullet whose offending places them at risk of::
  • being received into Care/Secure Accommodation
  • progressing into the Criminal Justice System
Aims of the Service
bullet To maximise the appropriate use of supervision requirements for young people who are at risk of further offending .
bullet To provide a service to direct young people from the Criminal Justice System, including those who are not currently on supervision through the hearing system.
bullet To reduce the offending rates for young people participating in the Project and to work towards increasing the young persons ability to sustain non-offending behaviour.
bullet To improve the participant's personal confidence and self-esteem and to help them to learn to cope more effectively in the management of their own lives.
bullet To link participants with existing community resources especially in relation to education employment and liesure.
What the Service Provides

Initially, after referral to the Project, an individual assessment (over a 3-week period) will identify the key issues which impact on young person's offending This assessment will form the main focus of the work carried out with young people

Following the initial assessment period, individual and/or groupwork sessions will be provided at the project. During this time the young people will be supported to address their offending and associated problems.

bullet Offending Behaviour
bullet Consequences Of Offending
bullet Victim Awareness
bullet Alcohol And Drug Use
bullet Personal Relationships
bullet Personal Confidence And Self-esteem

The young person will also be offered a programme designed with the aim of increasing the chance of future employment, obtaining a training placement or continuing education. The young person will work with a member of staff to determine which modular programme would be most effective.

Who Can Refer

Social Workers, Children's Panel Members, The Reporter and the Criminal Justice System can make referrals.

Referal Process 
bullet Telephone contact with the Project Manager to discuss the appropriateness of the referral.
bullet If the referral is suitable, the Project Referral Form should be completed, attaching the most recent Children's Panel Report. The referral will then be allocated to a Project Worker for assessment.
